Courts Service’s statement on the death of former Supreme Court Judge Mr Justice Frank Griffin

The death has occurred of retired Supreme Court Judge Mr Justice Frank Griffin. He was in his 98th year.

The Chief Justice Mrs Justice Susan Denham today said she learned with sadness of the death of Judge Griffin.

The Chief Justice said:

“He was a distinguished man, with great warmth and character. He married his great intellectual ability with common sense.

He chaired the Special Criminal Court during a difficult time in Irish history (1972-73).

He was a Judge of the High Court from 1971-73 and Supreme Court from 1973 – 1991. He had a long and distinguished legal career.

He will be remembered for his dignity as a member of the Judiciary.

He has left a distinguished legacy of many judgments on significant constitutional issues.

I extend my condolences to his family, and I know he took great joy in their company during his very long and fulfilling retirement”.
